There are three major contingency-related plans: The continuity of operations or the Business Continuity Plan (BCP), Contingency Plan, and the Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP). The BCP describes how an organization’s critical missions will work for up to 30days after the disaster (Wager et al., 2013). Disaster Recovery is more like one aspect of a business continuity plan which mostly focuses on health information technology.

A practical and concise Business Continuity Plan helps organizations protect patients and employees, deliver the best patient care, limit financial loss, and preserve reputation, thus making it an essential part of healthcare organizations’ success. BCP mainly focuses on identifying the critical functions in an organization and what resources are needed to re-establish these functions as quickly and seamlessly to decrease the financial loss and increase the organization’s efficiency (Hiller et al., 2015). The lack of a BCP can result in serious downtime for healthcare organizations after a disaster and loss of time and resources.

A disaster recovery plan focuses specifically on getting IT infrastructure and operations, including hardware, software, and networks, up and running after a disaster or unplanned event. As the BCP, the goal of DRP is to restore the functions of healthcare organizations quickly and efficiently. DRP is crucial when an outage or a bug is causing the infrastructure to crash, thereby putting the patient and the confidential organizational data at stake.

Both BCP and DRP are essential in a healthcare organization as both help protect confidential data and maintain healthcare organizations’ efficiency. They can also help save lives by ensuring continuity of critical operations in organizations and restoring essential patient data almost immediately. Every healthcare organization should give both plans the time and attention they deserve to be truly prepared when disaster strikes.

Hi everyone,

A business continuity plan, BCP, is a predetermined set of procedures that describe how an organizations’ essential functions will be sustained for up to thirty days because of a disaster event before returning to normal operations (Wager et al., 2013). A BCP is not specifically IT focused, the main scope addressed the organization’s critical missions (Wager et al., 2013). Because most departments within a healthcare organization are autonomous, multiple BCP’s must be coordinated into an effective overall plan (Wager et al., 2013). According to Wager et al. (2013), a disaster recovery plan, DRP, is a written plan for processing critical applications in the event of a major IT failure or destructions of facilities.

I think having a DRP is more critical to a healthcare organization. DRP’s plan for the recovery or replacement of damaged computer systems or interruptions of computer service, whether in a small practice or in a large hospital. This is critical because without computer systems, a healthcare organization would not be functional. A disruption or loss in computer service would render patient flow impossible. Patient files could not be accessed, patients would not be able to be checked in, test would not be conducted. Though BCP’s are important to have in place, I think DRP’s would be utilized more often, even with a slight connectivity issue within a practice.
