Creating a Mission and Vision for an Organization
Creating an effective mission statement helps provide the foundation for the development of a strategic plan for an organization, which can be communicated through its vision statement. Mission statements should serve to provide “external and internal communication and motivation” that provides employees with a well-defined picture of what the organization stands for and how they can achieve future goals (Verma, as cited by Cady, Wheeler, Dewolf, & Brodke, 2011, p. 65). This discussion will provide a mission and vision statement for Mountain View Health Center.
Mountain View Health Center
Mountain View Health Center is a non-profit, small, acute care hospital that serves a community of multicultural, poor residents, with a large population of migratory workers seeking care in the summer months. Revenue is not always guaranteed as a majority of their patients are uninsured and cannot afford to pay for medical expenses out of pocket. Most of the hospital’s revenue comes from Medicare and Medicaid, however, the hospital continues to suffer a loss of revenue. Due to the hospital’s small size, rural location, and lower wages, nurses and providers often seek employment elsewhere which causes staff shortages at Mountain View Health Center. Although the hospital faces many fiscal challenges, it continues to perform on par with national benchmarks. (Laureate Education, 2013b).
Mountain View Health Center Mission Statement
Desmidt, Prinzie, & Decramer (2011) identified that a mission statement should provide direction and purpose, focus on the allocation of resources, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and describe the values of the organization to provide guidance and inspire its staff. The mission statement I have created for Mountain View Health Center is: “Mountain View Health Center is a non-profit organization of professional team members that recognizes the value of every person and is committed to excellent quality and patient-focused healthcare for the whole person. We are guided by our commitment to care for those most in need with the provision of highly specialized services to a broader community.”
Vision statements should set the direction for an organization, as well as set the precedence for where the organization wants to be in the future, and how they will get there (Sare & Ogilvie, 2010). Mountain View Health Center’s vision statement is: “We embrace a community that allows all people to achieve optimal health and well-being by being the number one, trusted choice for acute care. We are committed to our patients, employees, and people through the provision of high quality, evidence-based healthcare that meets the healthcare needs of every individual.”
